Riyadh Weather: A Desert Capital’s Climate Explained

Riyadh sits in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula at an elevation of approximately 612 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Najd plateau and bordered by the Tuwaiq escarpment to the west. The city experiences a hot desert climate (Koppen classification BWh) characterised by extreme summer heat, mild winters, very low humidity, and minimal rainfall. Understanding Riyadh’s weather patterns is essential for travel planning — the difference between visiting in January versus July is not subtle; it is the difference between a pleasant outdoor experience and a survival challenge.

Saudi Arabia welcomed 122 million visitors in 2025, and the vast majority of leisure tourists time their visits to avoid the summer extremes. Riyadh hotel occupancy averages approximately 62% across the year, but this average masks sharp seasonal variation driven primarily by weather and the October-March Riyadh Season entertainment calendar.

For a broader analysis of seasonal factors beyond weather — including events, hotel pricing, and crowd levels — see our best time to visit guide and seasonal comparison guide.

Month-by-Month Weather

January

  • Average High: 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 11 mm
  • UV Index: Moderate (4-6)
  • Conditions: Cool and pleasant. The most comfortable month for outdoor sightseeing. Evenings can feel cold by Riyadh standards — visitors from tropical countries may find sub-10-degree nights surprisingly chilly. A medium-weight jacket is essential for evenings. Ideal for Edge of the World and Wadi Hanifah excursions. Riyadh Season is in full swing with events including WWE Royal Rumble and Premier Padel.

February

  • Average High: 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 7 mm
  • UV Index: Moderate to High (5-7)
  • Conditions: Warming but still very comfortable. Founding Day celebrations on February 22 add cultural activity. Excellent for walking Diriyah and the heritage quarter. Daytime temperatures are ideal for extended outdoor activities. Ramadan may overlap (varies annually by lunar calendar).

March

  • Average High: 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 22 mm
  • UV Index: High (7-8)
  • Conditions: Transitional month. Daytime warmth increases but remains manageable for outdoor activities. March is one of the wetter months — though 22 mm is still very dry by global standards, occasional rain can cause flash flooding in wadis (a safety consideration for day trips). Sandstorm season begins. Riyadh Season typically concludes mid-March. Sunscreen becomes essential for extended outdoor exposure.

April

  • Average High: 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 18 mm
  • UV Index: Very High (8-9)
  • Conditions: The heat becomes noticeable. Mornings and evenings remain pleasant for outdoor activities, but midday sun is strong and direct outdoor exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM should be minimised. Sandstorms can occur — check weather forecasts before desert excursions. Art Week Riyadh provides cultural programming. This is the last comfortable month for full-day outdoor itineraries.

May

  • Average High: 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 5 mm
  • UV Index: Extreme (10-11)
  • Conditions: Hot. Outdoor activities should be limited to early morning (before 9 AM) or evening (after 5 PM). The UV index reaches dangerous levels — sunburn can occur within 15-20 minutes of unprotected midday exposure. Air-conditioned attractions — National Museum, shopping malls, Kingdom Centre Tower — become the practical daytime options. Hotel rates begin dropping.

June

  • Average High: 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 0 mm
  • UV Index: Extreme (11+)
  • Conditions: Extreme heat begins. Zero rainfall. The city functions around air conditioning — you move from air-conditioned hotel to air-conditioned car to air-conditioned destination. The Riyadh Metro provides a critical climate-controlled transit corridor. Desert excursions are inadvisable — the Edge of the World with no shade at 43+ degrees is a medical risk. Even short outdoor walks require sun protection and hydration.

July

  • Average High: 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 0 mm
  • UV Index: Extreme (11+)
  • Conditions: The hottest month. Temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) during heat waves. The city does not stop functioning — Saudis are adapted to this climate, and malls, restaurants, and indoor venues operate normally — but outdoor tourism is impractical. Car surfaces become too hot to touch. Pavement radiates stored heat well into the evening. Hotel rates are at their lowest, making this the cheapest time for budget travelers. Esports World Cup provides niche entertainment.

August

  • Average High: 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 0 mm
  • UV Index: Extreme (11+)
  • Conditions: Comparable to July. Extreme heat continues. The low humidity (often below 10%) means sweat evaporates instantly, which provides some cooling sensation but masks dehydration. Drink water continuously — 3-4 litres per day minimum. The dry heat is less oppressive than humid heat (unlike coastal Gulf cities), but the temperature magnitude is dangerous without precautions.

September

  • Average High: 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 0 mm
  • UV Index: Very High to Extreme (9-11)
  • Conditions: Still very hot but the worst of summer is ending. Saudi National Day on September 23 brings celebrations that draw visitors despite the heat — fireworks, air shows, and evening events take advantage of slightly cooler post-sunset temperatures. Riyadh Season launch announcements build anticipation for October.

October

  • Average High: 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 5 mm
  • UV Index: High (7-9)
  • Conditions: The transition to cooler weather begins. Riyadh Season typically launches in October (the 2025 edition opened October 10 and attracted 1 million visitors in 13 days). Outdoor activities become feasible again in late afternoon and evening. Desert excursions to the Edge of the World resume for experienced visitors willing to depart early morning. Still too hot for midday outdoor activity.

November

  • Average High: 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 12 mm
  • UV Index: Moderate to High (5-7)
  • Conditions: Excellent weather. Warm days and cool evenings. Noor Riyadh light festival typically falls in November. Ideal for outdoor dining at Bujairi Terrace and walking heritage sites. All-day outdoor itineraries are comfortable. The best weather for photography — golden hour light is particularly rich in the clear, dry November atmosphere. See our Photography Guide.

December

  • Average High: 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Average Low: 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Rainfall: 14 mm
  • UV Index: Moderate (4-6)
  • Conditions: Cool and pleasant. Soundstorm music festival in December. Riyadh Season is in full swing. Evenings require a jacket — temperatures drop quickly after sunset. Morning desert excursions may start cold (below 10 degrees Celsius) before warming rapidly. One of the best months to visit overall.

Sandstorms

Sandstorms (also called dust storms) are a periodic feature of Riyadh’s climate, most common from March through May. During a sandstorm, visibility drops dramatically — sometimes to less than 100 metres — the sky turns orange or brown, and fine sand penetrates clothing, bags, and respiratory passages.

What to Do: Stay indoors if possible. If caught outside, cover your mouth and nose with a cloth, buff, or mask. Close car windows and recirculate air rather than drawing from outside. Protect electronics — fine sand damages camera sensors, phone charging ports, and laptop keyboards. Flights can be delayed or diverted during severe storms — check airline status if traveling during sandstorm season.

Duration: Most sandstorms last several hours. Severe storms can persist for a day or more. The Saudi Meteorological Authority provides weather warnings through local media and apps, though sandstorms can develop quickly with limited advance notice.

Health Impact: Visitors with respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD, allergies) should carry medication and minimise outdoor exposure during dusty conditions. Even healthy visitors may experience dry throat, irritated eyes, and nasal congestion during and after sandstorms. Wearing sunglasses provides eye protection against airborne particles. A nasal saline spray helps flush irritants from nasal passages after exposure.

Driving: Visibility reduction during sandstorms makes driving dangerous, particularly on desert roads and highways. If caught driving during a sandstorm, reduce speed, turn on headlights, and consider pulling over in a safe location until visibility improves. Do not attempt desert excursions during sandstorm warnings.

UV Index and Sun Safety

Riyadh’s UV index ranges from moderate (3-5) in winter to extreme (11+) in summer. For context, a UV index above 8 is classified as “very high” by the World Health Organisation, and Riyadh exceeds this level for approximately six months of the year (April through September).

Protection Essentials:

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen, reapplied every two hours during outdoor activities — and more frequently if sweating
  • Sunglasses with UV protection (polarised lenses reduce desert glare)
  • A hat with a wide brim — baseball caps leave ears and neck exposed
  • Long sleeves and long trousers provide physical UV barrier in addition to meeting modesty requirements
  • Seek shade during peak UV hours (10 AM to 3 PM) in summer months

See our packing list for specific sun protection product recommendations.

Timing Outdoor Activities: In summer, limit outdoor exposure to before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. In winter, all-day outdoor activities are comfortable with standard sun protection. The golden hours around sunrise and sunset provide the best light for photography at KAFD, Kingdom Centre Tower, and the heritage sites.

How Weather Affects Your Itinerary

Cool Season (November-February): Build your itinerary around outdoor attractions. Edge of the World, Wadi Hanifah, Diriyah, and King Abdullah Park are all at their best. Outdoor dining at Bujairi Terrace and Boulevard City is comfortable. Plan full-day outdoor itineraries without heat constraints. The weather is the primary reason the October-March period is Riyadh’s peak tourism season.

Hot Season (June-September): Shift to indoor attractions. The National Museum, shopping malls, fine dining, and hotel facilities become the practical core of your itinerary. Schedule any outdoor visits for early morning (before 9 AM). Consider day trips only if departing before dawn and returning by mid-morning. The Riyadh Metro provides air-conditioned transit between indoor destinations. Hotel rates are at their lowest — the trade-off for heat is savings.

Transition Months (March-May, October): These months offer a mix of outdoor and indoor options. Morning outdoor activities followed by afternoon indoor retreats is the typical pattern. October marks the return of feasible outdoor tourism; May marks its departure.

Humidity and Comfort

Unlike coastal Gulf cities (Dubai, Doha, Jeddah), Riyadh has very low humidity — typically 10-30% throughout the year. This means the heat, while extreme, feels different from humid heat. There is no sticky, oppressive humidity. Sweat evaporates rapidly, which provides some natural cooling but also accelerates dehydration. Drinking water consistently is the single most important health practice for visitors in Riyadh, regardless of season. Aim for 3-4 litres per day during warm months and 2-3 litres during winter.

The low humidity also affects skin, hair, and respiratory comfort. Moisturiser, lip balm, and nasal saline spray are useful additions to your travel kit, particularly during extended stays. Visitors from humid climates (Southeast Asia, coastal US, UK, northern Europe) notice the dryness within hours of arrival. See our packing list for specific product recommendations.

Riyadh vs. Other Gulf Cities: Weather Comparison

Riyadh’s inland desert climate differs significantly from the coastal Gulf cities that many visitors use as reference points:

  • Dubai and Doha: Coastal humidity (40-90%) makes summer heat feel more oppressive despite similar temperatures. Riyadh’s dry heat is technically more tolerable at the same temperature, but the absence of coastal breezes and the higher typical temperatures offset this advantage.
  • Jeddah: Coastal Red Sea humidity creates a muggy summer climate. Riyadh is drier and hotter but less humid.
  • Winter comparison: Riyadh’s winters are cooler than coastal Gulf cities — January lows of 9 degrees Celsius versus 15-18 degrees Celsius in Dubai. Riyadh visitors need jackets; Dubai visitors rarely do.
