Riyadh Culture: Art, Heritage, Shopping, and Urban Transformation

Riyadh’s cultural landscape has undergone a transformation as dramatic as its entertainment revolution. The Riyadh Art megaproject — launched by King Salman in March 2019 — plans to install more than 1,000 artworks across neighborhoods, parks, metro stations, bridges, and tourism destinations, making it one of the largest public art projects in the world. Works by Alexander Calder, Jeff Koons, and Robert Indiana already mark metro stations and city squares. SAMoCA (Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art) opened at the JAX District in Diriyah in 2023, and Art Week Riyadh’s inaugural edition in April 2025 featured forty-five galleries, seventy artists, and two hundred artworks across eight venues.

Museums — The National Museum of Saudi Arabia remains the city’s flagship cultural institution, with free admission and eight halls designed by architect Raymond Moriyama. But the museum ecosystem extends well beyond this anchor — Diriyah’s galleries at At-Turaif, Diriyah Art Futures (a new-media art hub), and neighborhood museums throughout the historic core tell the story of the Arabian Peninsula’s evolution.

Art Scene — Riyadh’s gallery ecosystem stretches from the Diriyah and JAX District creative hub — with studios, galleries, SAMoCA, and the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale — to the inner-city gallery belt along the Olaya/Takhassusi/Al-Urubah corridor, where L’Art Pur Foundation, Lakum Artspace, and ATHR Gallery operate. The Al Mousa Center houses approximately twenty art galleries. Noor Riyadh, the annual light art festival, has drawn 9.6 million total visitors since 2021 and secured four Guinness World Records.

Shopping — The shopping landscape ranges from luxury to traditional. Kingdom Centre Mall at the base of the Kingdom Tower offers 150-plus luxury stores. Al Nakheel Mall draws 200,000 weekly visitors with 200-plus outlets, Sparky’s indoor amusement park, and Billy Beez play park. Riyadh Park Mall provides a mix of high-street and contemporary brands. Souq Al Zal near Masmak Fortress offers traditional antiques, perfumes, spices, and handicrafts.

Nightlife and Entertainment — Vision 2030 entertainment reforms have transformed Riyadh’s after-dark scene. Riyadh Season runs October through March with concerts, theatrical performances, comedy shows, and sporting events. Boulevard City and KAFD offer year-round dining and entertainment. The city’s coffee culture extends well past midnight.

Architecture — From the Najdi mud-brick buildings of Diriyah to the Zaha Hadid-designed KAFD Metro Station, Riyadh’s architectural vocabulary spans centuries. The Kingdom Centre Tower, Al Faisaliah Tower, and the emerging Qiddiya mega-project represent the contemporary vision.

Heritage Sites — Beyond the UNESCO-inscribed Diriyah At-Turaif, the city preserves its founding narrative through the Masmak Fortress, Al Bujairi Heritage Quarter, and traditional souqs.
